If you have a dog who jumps on guests, there are several fixes:

1. Training an incompatible behavior
2. Management
3. Longterm practices 

Management

• Put a leash on the dog and tie the end of the leash to the wall. That is a good quick fix (but not a long term solution)

Training: When it comes to training incompatible behavior:

• Our favorite thing to train is lying on a mat (preferably a raised bed like the Kuranda mat). Then have guests come up to the dog on the mat and pet them.
• Other things to train are sit, down, and hand-target (touch), which are good when outdoors and the Kuranda mat is not available 

Long term practices

• Work on impulse control. A great one is that the dog has to sit for dinner. Once the dog knows that, you can have the dog sit for petting, sit for going outdoors, and eventually they generalize and learn that if they sit, that means that they want something and you’ll do it for them (we joke that this is “Sit for Please”.
• Establish a great relationship (lots of positive reinforcement training, like sit and down with food rewards is our favorite because it is so positive, so easy, and so effective).
